Cement Storage Best Practices
Cement is a perishable material. Exposure to moisture, air, or improper stacking can reduce its strength by up to 40% within weeks. Proper storage is essential to prevent wastage and maintain quality.
Storage Rules
- Elevated Platform: Store bags on a raised platform (minimum 6 inches above ground) using wooden planks or concrete blocks
- Covered Space: Always store in a covered, enclosed area. If outdoor, use waterproof tarpaulin sheets
- Stack Height: Maximum 10 bags high. Higher stacking causes bottom bags to compress and harden
- Gap from Walls: Leave at least 12 inches gap between bags and walls to allow air circulation
- FIFO Method: Use First-In-First-Out — always use older stock first
- Ventilation: Ensure the storage area has good ventilation to prevent moisture buildup
Shelf Life
- 0-3 months: Full strength (100%)
- 3-6 months: Approximately 80% strength
- 6-12 months: Approximately 60% strength
- Over 12 months: Should be tested before use
Signs of Damaged Cement
- Hard lumps inside the bag
- Bag feels stiff or compressed
- Color change (unusually dark)
- Bag is wet or shows moisture stains
Pro Tip: Order cement in phases matching your construction schedule rather than stockpiling everything at once. This ensures maximum freshness and minimum wastage.
